Rules around cookies have changed...

A Cookie Regulation that was officially announced as UK (and EU) law on 20th May 2011 states that website owners must gain a visitor’s consent that they will be tracked by cookies on that website. Our website uses implied consent, in that if you agree to use our website, then you also agree to the small number of cookies that our website uses to operate.

We wanted to help explain what cookies are, why we use them and how they affect your web experience.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a piece of information which a website transfers to the cookie folder of the browser on your computer. The browser then saves the information and sends it back to the website server. When that browser returns to the same website the cookie will recognise the user.

A cookie will typically contain details such as the domain from which the cookie has come from, a value which is usually a random unique number as an identifier and the lifetime (expiry) of the cookie.

What type of cookies does our website use?

We use a very basic 'Session Cookie' allowing our site to 'remember' content from page to page (these expire when you leave the website or close the browser).

We also use Google Analytics to measure visitors to our website, which will use a combination of ‘Session Cookies’ and 'Persistent Cookies'. Google Analytics records what pages you view within our site, how you arrived at our site and some basic information about your computer. All of that information is anonymous – so we don't know who you are; just that somebody visited our site.

The information we collect from analytics helps us understand what parts of our sites are doing well, how people arrive at our site and so on. Like most websites, we use this information to make our website better.

What if I do not want to accept cookies?

If you choose not to accept cookies your experience on our website will usually be unaffected - you may just find it a little more difficult to navigate around the site. You can choose to not accept our cookies by changing your browser settings.

You can also opt out of Google Analytics by following the instructions at the GA Opt-Out Page.
